Today we FINALLY took the boat out on the water! Last year the fifth graders built the boat in October. Today both fifth and sixth graders took the boat out on the Boat Lake in Patterson Park on a trial run. Students worked together to paddle themselves around the lake. We will be using the boat in our reenactment film of "The Battle of Baltimore" next Friday. Some students were even interviewed by City Schools about their project. It was quite a day!

Our fifth graders are continuing with their preparation for the Historic Field Day on May 17th as part of their Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail community service project with the National Park Service. Today students used their Math and Science skills to carve out muskets used during the War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore. We take the boat out on the water this Thursday! Everything they are constructing will be used in the film! Thanks for all your help Mr. Hendrick! Over the course of the next few weeks, the fifth graders will be preparing for a film that will be a "reenactment" of the Battle of Baltimore. The film will be shown at the Historic Field Day here in the park on May 17th as part of the unveiling of the marker for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. Yesterday in art class students utilized Math and Art skills to recreate the American Flag (Can you guess how many stars we had in 1814?) and the British Flag that will be used in the film. The fun is just beginning! The following article was posted on the National Park Service website this week. I am unable to connect to the link so I have pasted it here for you.
PPPCS students at the Smithsonian to see the actual Star Spangled Banner in person Last week our students finished their research on their Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. This week we will vote on our top 3 that we want to send into the National Park Service. Next we will be creating the uniforms, designing the weapons, painting the boat that will all be used in our film we are making in our reenactment of the Battle of Baltimore. On Friday students spent some time at the Maryland Historical Society in Mt. Vernon. There students continued their research of The Battle of Baltimore. Students looked at artifacts from the time period and gained a better understanding of what life was like in Baltimore in 1814. Students also worked with primary source documents from the MDHS Archives and learned about events and other logistics on Hampstead Hill leading up to the Battle of Baltimore. All of their research will be important for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail community service project. We had quite an exciting trip to Ft. McHenry last Friday. Not only did we tour the Visitor's Center and the Fort itself, but we also got to take part in the flag activity. Many of our students had lots of prior knowledge of the Battle of Baltimore and the flag itself because of the Flag House tour they went on a few years ago. After lunch we observed the last remaining salt marsh in the entire harbor. We collected a water sample from there and plan on comparing the brackish water of the Patapsco River to the fresh water we collected at the Boat Lake today in Patterson Park! For more photos scroll down here. We were surprised with a field trip to Ft. McHenry this upcoming Friday! We will primarily be learning about The War of 1812 and the Battle of Baltimore. We will also take in the sights and sounds of the Patapsco River and the last salt marsh left on the entire harbor. I have attached the field trip slip for those students who were invited. Over the course of the school year we will be working WITH the National Park Service to create and dedicate some official memorials and plaques here in the park dedicated to the brave citizens here during the Battle of Baltimore. We hope the park can be a focal point for the Bicentennial of the Battle of Baltimore in Sep. 2014! To learn more about the Battle of Baltimore and what happened here in the park read the link! (Hampstead Hill is the name of the hill where the Pagoda is now located in the park.) Baltimore's long anticipated Sailabration starts tomorrow! There will be many events throughout the next week. This will be a great time to see up close what we will be learning about next year in fifth grade! For those of you who are moving on to middle school learn more about the Battle of Baltimore and The War of 1812. I hope to see everyone there! |
